Dr Tabane gained a lot of confidence and experience as a junior doctor, especially in obstetrics and family medicine in Limpopo. In 2003 he commenced Private General Practice in Mamelodi but continued to do session work at Matlala Hospital, Philadelphia Hospital and Mamelodi Hospital.

After resigning from all his session work in 2007, Dr Carl Tabane enrolled at the University of Pretoria to complete his Master’s degree in Sports Medicine. During his 2nd year of study, he joined Supersport United FC as a Team Physician and won two premier league titles and the Nedbank Cup with the Pretoria outfit, under the guidance of Coaches Gavin Hunt and the late Thomas Madigage. He then travelled with the team to several African countries for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup.

He finally completed his Master’s degree in Sports Medicine in 2009 and also obtained a Certificate in Football Medicine endorsed by FIFA at the University of Witwatersrand in that very same year. As a sports physician, Dr Tabane was part of the medical team based in Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and FIFA World Cup 2010.

After having completed his course at the University of Witwatersrand in conjunction with the College of Medicine in 2011, Dr Tabane is also a Travel Health consultant and offers a travel clinic for those travelling abroad.

In December 2011 Dr Tabane was appointed as the Team Physician for the South African Senior National Football Team, Bafana Bafana. He remained in that role until 2014. In December 2013, Dr Tabane left Supersport United for Mamelodi Sundowns, where he continues to serve a Head of Medical.

Beyond sports medicine, Dr Tabane is a compassionate General Practitioner who aims to treat and manage acute and chronic conditions holistically. With his insight into the integrative nature of the body and his experience in the field, Dr Tabane offers the full range of services related to primary healthcare and preventative medicine. He specialises in sports medicine and can assist in the necessary medical attention from dieticians, physiotherapists and psychologists. From Dr Tabane’s practice in Mamelodi West, he offers a travel clinic, laboratory services and free HIV testing and HIV treatment.
