PSYCHOLOGIST
A licensed psychologist is qualified to do counselling and psychotherapy and psychological testing. Psychologists are not allowed to write prescriptions or perform any medical procedures. Psychologist are responsible for drawing from one or more theories of psychotherapy to help give guidance through the process of understanding people and their different problems and then come up with a solution. There are different types of therapies that psychologists may perform, namely:
- Cognitive behavioural therapy – this therapy puts emphasises on what people think rather than what they do. Dysfunctional thinking may lead to dysfunctional emotions or behaviours; therefore, by changing people’s thoughts, therapists believe that people can then change how they feel alongside what they do.
- Psychotherapy – this is a therapy that provides assistance with a variety of problems from depression, and low self-esteem to addiction and family disputes. This is best for anyone that is feeling overwhelmed by their problems.
- Couple therapy or marriage counselling – marriage counselling is a relationship therapy which focuses on building and maintaining a strong and healthy marriage. The main goal for marriage counselling is to reunite the couple.
Psychologists may have other roles too as they may carry out studies that advise health authorities and other people on social and other strategies. They assess children who have difficulties in learning at school, give workshops on the prevention of bullying, work with recruitment teams in companies, just to name a few.
